Library (The Info Hub)

The holiday summer reading slump or slide is real.  The home and school partnership can arrest this holiday slump!

Our library is our schools 'hub' for developing life long learners:
  • to read
  • to explore
  • to inquire
  • to imagine
  • to create

Our purposes:
  • We create a stimulating, accessible learning environment in which students develop an enthusiasm for information and an enjoyment of reading.
  • We provide centralised access to resources that support the school’s teaching and learning programmes and student’s recreational reading interests.
  • We broaden students experiences, widen their understanding of the diversity of cultures, and increase their knowledge of the world around them, thus enhancing their self identity.
  • We provide a variety of opportunities for students to undertake inquiry learning and develop information literacy skills, using a wide range of resources and information technologies.

We use the:
Big6 (senior students) and Super3 (junior students) as the research models  to support the teaching and learning of cross-curricula information literacy skills and dispositions.

Our wonderful librarian

Community support of this years book fair, in such a 'disastrous' year, was overwhelming.

We were able to raise $800 to go towards new reading material.

NOT TO MENTION
the awesome involvement of mums and dads in helping their children get into the spirit of dressing up as a
"MOVIE STAR" (based on book characters .... of course!!).

"The "summer slump" or "summer slide" is the decline in reading achievement children suffer just from being away from school. It is characterised by a staircase pattern of steady upward student achievement throughout the school year, only to drop back a certain amount during the long summer holidays away from formal literacy instruction."

According to the National Library Article (link below),  often, it is the students who can least afford to lose the reading gains they've achieved during the school year who fall the furthest behind, and the loss is not only in reading but also in maths.

Longitudinal data shows that the consequences are cumulative. ..... students who have access to books and holiday learning experiences such as travel, museum visits etc. fare much better.

What can you do at home during the summer holidays to avoid the summer slump?
  • read aloud to your child
  • encourage independent reading
  • visit yor public library
  • read or reread the Duffy books
  • have your child do some literacy activities such as letter or email writing.
  • read recipies and 'how to' manuals (lego models etc)
  • make books
  • download free e-books
  • swap books with their friends
Keep up with literacy and numeracy over the summer. Ask your child's teacher if your child can have access to Studyladder.

Ask your teacher to allow summer use of the
